  • IS 808 governs section shapes and dimensions. IS 2062 governs steel grade and chemistry. They are independent — always check both.

How BIS Assigns Standard Numbers

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) assigns numbers sequentially as standards are registered. The year suffix indicates the revision year. "Reaffirmed" means the standard was reviewed and confirmed valid without change. Both original and amended designations appear on drawings and mill certificates — the decoder above handles both.

Pipe and Hollow Section Standards

IS 1161 covers structural steel tubes intended for load-bearing applications, typically circular tubes.

Section Designation vs Material Grade — A Critical Distinction

⚠ ISMB 250 is a section designation governed by IS 808:1989. It defines the shape and cross-sectional dimensions of the beam. It does not specify the steel grade. The same ISMB 250 section can be ordered in IS 2062 E250, E300, or E350 — the grade must be specified separately in the purchase order and verified on the mill certificate.
