What is a Bill of Materials in steel fabrication?

A Bill of Materials (BOM) lists every steel section, size, quantity, and length needed for a project. Fabricators use it for procurement, cost estimation, and cutting instructions. This tool generates a BOM automatically from your item entries and calculates the total weight and stock bars required.

How is the stock bar count calculated?

Enter your standard stock length (default 6000 mm). The tool calculates total length needed per item (qty × length per piece) and divides by stock length, rounding up to the nearest whole bar using the formula: stockBars = ceil(qty × length / stockLength). This gives you the exact number of lengths to order.

What section types are supported?

Round Bar, Square Bar, Flat Bar / Plate, Round Pipe / Tube, Square Hollow Section (SHS), Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS), Angle / L-Section, and Channel / C-Section. Weight formulas use IS 808 and IS 1239 section geometry with a mild steel density of 7850 kg/m³.

What unit system does this tool use?

Every dimension field has its own unit selector — choose mm, cm, m, in, or ft independently per field, same as the Metal Weight Calculator. The stock length field also has a unit selector. Weight output can be set to kg, tonne, or lb globally and applies to all columns at once.
