ISMB 500 Weight, Dimensions and IS 808 Properties

ISMB 500 steel beam being craned into position at multi-storey steel frame construction site showing 500 mm depth and 180 mm flange
ISMB 500 — 500 × 180 mm I-section, 86.9 kg/m, manufactured to IS 808:1989. The 180 mm flange — a significant step up from ISMB 450 — provides improved weak-axis stiffness.

ISMB 500 weighs 86.9 kg per metre as per IS 808:1989.

  • One 6-metre length weighs 521.4 kg · one 12-metre length weighs 1,042.8 kg
  • Overall depth 500 mm · flange width 180 mm · web thickness 10.2 mm
  • Cross-sectional area 11,090 mm² · Ixx = 45,218.3 cm⁴

ISMB 500 is one of the heaviest sections in the standard ISMB range per IS 808:1989. Its substantially wider 180 mm flange — a jump from 150 mm at ISMB 450 — provides much improved lateral stability and makes it suitable for long-span structures, heavy crane bays, and transfer beams carrying significant loads.

Common Applications of ISMB 500

ISMB 500 is used for long-span transfer beams, heavy crane runway girders above 25-tonne capacity, and primary beams in multi-storey industrial buildings. The 180 mm flange provides good weak-axis stiffness — ryy of 3.52 cm — making it more forgiving of lateral bracing intervals than narrower heavy sections. SAIL Bhilai supplies ISMB 500 as a standard heavy-section product in IS 2062 E350 grade.

Worked Example

A heavy fabrication plant in Rajkot requires 3 transfer beams of ISMB 500 each 11.0 m long to support a 30-tonne EOT crane bay. Total length = 3 × 11.0 = 33 m. Weight = 33 × 86.9 = 2,867.7 kg (2.868 tonnes). At ₹58,000 per tonne (May 2026), estimated material cost is approximately ₹1,66,340.
